SILVER SPRING, Md. —A devastating 7.0-magnitude earthquake hit southern Haiti on Tuesday, January 12, destroying buildings and triggering tsunami alerts for Haiti and the surrounding islands in the Caribbean.

Within the first hour, the earthquake, which struck 10 miles (15 kilometers) outside the Haitian capital of Port-au-Prince, was followed by two powerful aftershocks registering at a magnitude of 5.9 and 5.5 respectively. According to government officials, this is the strongest earthquake that has ever struck the region.

“I think it is really a catastrophe of major proportions,” reported Raymond Joseph, Haiti’s ambassador to the United States telling Atlanta-based news agency CNN.

At present, no reports of deaths or injuries have been announced, however some early reports indicate extensive damage to infrastructure in some areas. The Associated Press reported that a hospital collapsed during the quake.

ADRA is currently monitoring and evaluating the situation. Updates will be released as response efforts expand.

Pat Robertson: Haiti Is Cursed, ‘Swore A Pact To The Devil’ (VIDEO)

Wednesday January 13, 2010 2:38 p.m.

Lead Photo

PAT ROBERTSON: And, you know, Kristi, something happened a long time ago in Haiti, and people might not want to talk about it. They were under the heel of the French. You know, Napoleon III and whatever. And they got together and swore a pact to the devil. They said, “We will serve you if you will get us free from the French.” True story. And so, the devil said, “OK, it’s a deal.”

And they kicked the French out. You know, the Haitians revolted and got themselves free. But ever since, they have been cursed by one thing after the other. Desperately poor. That island of Hispaniola is one island. It’s cut down the middle. On the one side is Haiti; on the other side is the Dominican Republic. Dominican Republic is prosperous, healthy, full of resorts, et cetera. Haiti is in desperate poverty. Same island. They need to have and we need to pray for them a great turning to God. And out of this tragedy, I’m optimistic something good may come. But right now, we’re helping the suffering people, and the suffering is unimaginable.

KRISTI WATTS (co-host): Absolutely, Pat.

Pat Robertson: Quake Hit Because Haiti ‘Swore Pact to the Devil

“Silly African slaves, fighting against white people angers God.Pat Robertson thinks that Haiti is poverty stricken (and earthquake-stricken) because the country made a deal with Satan to help them overthrow the French.

Back in May, the Times Online provided some slightly better insight into Haiti’s past. Beyond a vague assumption that Imperialism had probably screwed Haiti somehow, I didn’t know much about the country’s history. Reading this story has been nothing short of nauseating.

Summary: Haiti was forced to pay France for its freedom. When they couldn’t afford the ransom, France (and other countries, including the United States) helpfully offered high-interest loans. By 1900, 80% of Haiti’s annual budget went to paying off its “reparation” debt. They didn’t make the last payment until 1947. Just 10 years later, dictator François Duvalier took over the country and promptly bankrupted it, taking out more high-interest loans to pay for his corrupt lifestyle. The Duvalier family, with the blind-eye financial assistance of Western countries, killed 10s of thousands of Haitians, until the Haitian people overthrew them in 1986. Today, Haiti is still paying off the debt of an oppressive dictator no one would help them get rid of for 30 years.

The rest of the world refuses to forgive this debt.

So, in a way, maybe Robertson is right. Haiti is caught in a deal with the devil, and the devil is us.

You keep making these outlandish statements but when anyone replies to you, you won’t answer. If you want to be taken seriously, then respond when you are replied to. I have refuted your statements with Bible verses (which you do not give) several times. I have asked what religion you are and what Bible you read, but you refuse to answer. If you truly wanted to “share God” then you would stand up for your religion and explain why you believe the way you do.

This is not a time for politics or r@cism.
Regardless of what we think of these people based upon where they live or who runs their country, there are untold numbers of people injured and suffering.
They deserve the same care and compassion as anyone.

A catastrophe could happen right where you’re sitting.

If an earthquake ruined your home and your life you’d want people to care and help. If nothing else, we can all show compassion for these poor, unfortunate people.

Whenever we vilify and degrade any life, we’re all diminished.

Our lives on this planet are too short, the work to be done too great, to let this spirit flourish.

Perhaps we can remember, if only for a time,
that those who live with us are our brothers and sisters,
that we share this same short moment of life,
that we seek nothing but the chance to live in purpose and in happiness,
winning what satisfaction and fulfillment that we can.

At the end of the day, and at the end of life we’re all the same.

The religious faith of the Haitian people would put many, if not most, American Christians to shame. They’re a people who live a harsh life every day and still have faith that doesn’t waver. They’re a people who deal with death, malnutrition, disease, lack of education, crushing poverty, and external meddling in their affairs daily and it affects the lives of almost every Haitian citizen every day and they are still willing to share the last scrap of food off of their plate with visitors. They’re a people who, despite hardship that most of us would quickly buckle under, continually thank God for the little that they do have and do so with a smile on their face and in their heart. Haiti is the country equivalent of Job and if Robertson can’t/won’t see that, then he is blind of eye, but even moreso blind of heart and soul.

One must feel sorry for Robertson. It is obvious he is delusional, probably suffering from Alzheimers. Seems he has lost his last contact with Humanity, if he ever had any. Such a sad spectacle. With such characters on God’s side, why is it more people don’t question? Any God who would play with people in such a way as this disaster does not warrant worship. I always find it amusing that, in times such as these, people will say it is God’s will and then tell the people to pray to that same God for help. Stupid is as stupid does I suppose.

Because it is not about principles, logic, honesty, progress.

All that is going on is,
the right needs to spread enough despair and confusion,

That is how they manipulate elections,

If that doesn’t work, they threaten with chaos.

The influence on our national discourse, above all upon the political right, of Robertson’s extreme brand of fundamentalism is not merely “some guy spouting nonsense”. This is the official state religion of the neocons, providing their blessing to the latter-day crusade that has morally justified all of the war crimes committed in the war on terror, and gives a pass to Israel’s atrocities against the Palestinians.
Your dismissive comment is a copout and shows a disturbing lack of awareness of the dangers inherent when the line between church and state becomes blurred.

He is the devil himself and if his family had any brains, they would put him out to pasture and then clean up all of the filth and lies he has promoted. How do these unintelligent blowhards get so much press?

I hope the IRS has their audit pencils sharpened and go through his books and disallow any tax exempt status he has and make him pay back taxes for a long as he has been in business. Then we may see justice.

Pat’s followers are PLIFs:

“People Living In Fear”, a reference to conservative or fundamentalist followers of any religion that leads them to be fearful of any questioning of their religious doctrine or to be open to creative, new ideas. Because psychologically fear is such a crippling emotion, psychologically healthy people tend to try and control and recognize this in themselves. Those who don’t tend to rely on more dictatorial or authoritarian leaders whether they be in the form of a political leader or their own chosen God.

So true. My husband is a psychologist and he says certain personality types are attracted to certain forms of religion and politics.

It must be true if your psychologist husband says it.

Robertson is ‘trash in a pulpit’, to be sure, but the more he flaps his mouth, the more we seem obliged to listen – one of the ‘upsides’ of freedom of speech.

Why is anybody possibly interested in this old non compos mentis and his fairytales? Why on earth was he consulted regarding this matter, and why was he given air time?

The world is filled with deranged people and cockemamey theories. Do the responsable parties believe that it is amusing to broadcast as insultingly misguided and ignorant opinions such as these in the wake of a tragedy which has left hundreds of thousands dead?

The ‘Christian Broadcasting Network’ (about as ‘Christian’ as a wad of used toilet paper) lionizes monsters such as these and disseminates their fruitcake theories. It should have its license revoked.

So Pat Robertson’s (Christendom) position is that during the slave trade these black people somehow made a deal with the devil to get out of the bondage of slavery from the French. Associating blacks with the devil is racist. So when the Jewish wanted out of bondage they got to speak with God himself? I myself want nothing to do with any white man’s religions NOR Islam since they both originated from the “god of Abraham”.

AGAIN…

WHY is it that NOBODY.. none on the “right”.. none who proclaim themselves “christians”… has called this piece of SCHIDT on his holdings in the diamond minds that use SLAVE LABOR & when these poor, downtrodden people had the AUDACITY to try to lobby for a LIVING WAGE, they were BURIED ALIVE in the mines that they worked to make this DEMENTED “christian” RICH???

WHY is it that NO entity that represents the conservatives.. no CHURCH groups.. NOBODY in the evangelical movement have expressed their OUTRAGE at his similar words about new Orleans??

In their SILENCE, they tacitly AGREE with him.. in their SILENCE, they ENABLE him… in their SILENCE, they are as CULPABLE as he is & should be DESPISED as he should be.

Christ is RETCHING at the thought that this PUTRID excuse for a human being has the AUDACITY to speak in his behalf… & if there IS a “#ELL”… there is a SPECIAL place for ALL of them there.

The SOONER that they are there, the better.

I hear ya. I think there are some who would call him out on this.

Jim Wallis is a Christian on the left. I don’t know if he’s issued a statement. But for sure, he certainly wouldn’t be saying the Hatians deserved what they got.

I will write Pat myself for what it’s worth.

Robertson is a delusional, old man who should b=never be on TV, Why do any responsible media cover his rantings. Fox will take care of that for everyone, but fox encourages ignorance and has never been responsible.

Early in the Bush Regime, Robertson allowed him missionary program in Venezuela to be used as a front organization for American intelligence, who then would feed him anti-Chavez talking points that he dutifully announced on his 700 Club broadcasts. At one point, he apparently became so overwhelmed by all that he was being told that he announced that we should ….expedite the passing of Chavez. So concerned were the missionaries themselves regarding what might result in anti-christian blow-back, that they went to the Chavez government and reported the covert activities being done in the name of Christ. Whether innocently or through political self-righteous intent, Robertson’s political rantings on the 700-Club functioned as a political front for GOP outreach to the Republican religious base. And then he started selling mystery milkshakes and claiming that because of them, and despite being in his 80s he could now leg-press 3000 lbs — a boldfaced lie that any athlete would laugh at. Robertson is not the man they think he is at home.

The picture of the surprised look on his face when he finds himself at the Gates of Hell will be priceless!
